When my
Grandmother passed away, my Mother and I spent a week going through her
house finding bills, credit cards, insurance policies and you wouldn't
believe what all else scattered everywhere throughout her house. Every
time we opened another drawer we found another manila envelope (with no
writing on the outside) with more papers in it. And no organization
whatsoever. We were trying to plan a funeral in the middle of trying to
cancel credit cards that, come to find out, she didn't have anymore. We
were calling about insurance policies that had lapsed years ago and had to
go digging looking for current ones. We even found policies on my
Grandfather who had passed away 15 years earlier! Now why did she keep
those?
So, I
originally put this book together for my Mom to fill out telling me what
insurance polices she has, who with, and how to contact them. Who insures
her car, who she makes her house payment to, where she wants to be buried,
where her will is and about a zillion other things. If she gets sick, in a
serious accident, has to be put in nursing home, or even dies suddenly,
this book will save me and anyone else who has one, a ton of time, which
can be better spent with family.
Since she
lives several states away from me (and from were we all grew up), I have
no idea who her friends are, and who she would like to have contacted if
she goes into the hospital. So I put several pages of contact forms in the
book. I also included a spot for her church and her job. If she was
hospitalized for a long period of time, I would probably need to keep her
house up, so I put in a page for her household utilities with phone
numbers and account numbers so I could call and make whatever arrangements
were needed.
